Indian Engagement - May 2011
← Back to portfolio overviewIn less than a week, I orchestrated an Indian-inspired engagement party for the affluent Indian community. Tradition calls for the brother to throw the engagement party in honor of the groom. What we created was a venue that complimented the amazing view as the backdrop.
Hanging lilies spawned eight floor to ceiling windows. The tables had a blue silk cloth with subtle orange diamond prints and a glass vase overflowing with pink, orange, yellow and white flowers, sprinkled around with gold rice pearls. While for the buffet table, we had large flower arrangements alongside the food. But the most important area for the affair was actually the prayer area where all the women of the community will pray for the couple’s marriage. We had a soft lining installed covered by white cloth for the guests to sit on, in true Indian tradition. An Indian singer led them through the prayer, accompanied by a tabla player. In no time, they were dancing on their feet, in celebration of the engagement.
Masala pappad, samosas, naan, curries, were all set ready for the guests to devour, catered by Bombay Dreams. And I must say, that was one of the best tasting Indian food I’ve tried.
They wound down after, sitting around a table, listening to the host serenade the women. What a closely knit community!
